Welcome! Clothing from the sky! World War II soldiers would take the material from their parachutes to seamstresses to have dresses, robes etc. hand sewn to take back to the United States as gifts for their sweethearts and wives back home. Often they would take the silky parachute material home. Due to rationing and because fabric was extremely expensive in the states women would use the fabric to have their wedding dresses made as well. Examples of these ...beautiful gowns and other items are on display in museums. This robe and scarf are rare beauties and completely original. I honestly don't think this robe and scarf have ever been used......More like carefully folded in a box as when this sweetheart gift was received by the love interest of an Iowa soldier returning from World War II in 1943. Museum quality item. Extremely romantic and thought provoking and a beautiful display item and/ or decorative piece for a bedroom, upscale closet, bathroom or bedroom or anywhere you see fit.
The waist is very petite. Flattened out, as in the photo, the waist is approximately 33 1/2 inches from one end to the other. The waist folds over and has two snaps making for a small waist. The sash is approximately 67 inches long, the puffy sleeves are approximately 24 inches long and the length from the collar to the bottom of the robe is approximately 55 inches. The scarf is 32 inches wide at its widest part or the tie.
Please note the photograph of the note that was found included in the vintage Sears and Roebuck Christmas box that the "silk" (nylon actually) parachute material robe and matching scarf was found. I can almost see that US solider from Iowa thrilled to be back with his family and handing these beautiful items of clothing to their love in 1943. Both have the Asian dragon symbol which is a symbol of power, strength and good luck or people who are worth of it.
