The case is mostlymissing.Measurements: sixth plate 2¾” wide x 3 ¼” longDescription: You are bidding on an incredibly rareambrotype photo of a Confederate soldier. The soldier has a very serious look on his face with rosy tinted cheeksand ...is wearing his uniform with gold tinted buttons and shoulder pads. He is holding a Confederate staff officer’ssword and has a kepi hat laying in his lap. The insignia on the cap is also tinted in gold and appears to sayCS. I believe that this is a piecedepicting an image of a South Carolina soldier from a prominent family as itwas obtained from the estate of the family of William Dunlap Simpson. The soldier bears a resemblance to laterpictures of WD Simpson, so it may be him. Simpson was born in 1827, so this picture would have been of him when hewas 34-38 years old, which looks to be possible. I have attached a later image of Simpson foryou to compare. The auction is only forthe Civil War ambrotype. Simpson served in the SC Senate, the Confederate House ofRepresentatives, Lieutenant Colonel of the 14th SC Volunteers in theConfederate Congress, the 78th Governor of South Carolina (1879) andlater became the Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. The thick glass image has a gold metal boarderand interior decoration. It was obtainedfrom a local South Carolina estate and is being offered with no reserve.
