Very rare and stunningly beautiful, ca1890’s Native American Plains / Sioux Indian Bone Hairpipe Breastplate.
This beautiful, Bone Hairpipe Breastplate measures approx. 9" long and 7 1/2" wide. It contains 32, 3" long bone hairpipe beads along with wonderful, 19th century red white-heart beads and a circular bone central ornament. This type of hairpipe Breastplate was popular among Native American Tribes of the plains during the late 19th and early 20th cen...tury. We recently owned a very similar example that was identified to the Pine Ridge Sioux and we believe that this Breastplate is also of Sioux origin.
The Breastplate is constructed of early harness leather, bone hairpipe, glass trade beads and short buckskin fringe. It is strung with rawhide thongs and has a similar, rawhide strip neck hanger at the top edge. There is a large, circular polished bone ornaments at the top center of the Breastplate and two rawhide drops from the center of the bone disc that are strung with bone bugle beads.
The upper, hanger portion (above the hairpipe) is made of rawhide strips without ornamentation. The body of the Breastplate features a harness leather "frame" and 2 rows each with 16, 3" long bone hairpipe beads. Each hairpipe bead has a single red white-heart glass bead between its ends and the leather frame. The buckskin fringe at the sides are short. As stated above, there is a rather large, circular, shaped shell bone ornament at the top center of the Breastplate – the front surface of this disc is polished and from the center of the disc hangs a pair of rawhide drops strung with what appear to be bone bugle beads.

This rare and wonderful, Native American Plains / Sioux Indian Bone Hairpipe Breastplate is in very good condition but is in need of some repair. All of the bone hairpipe beads are present but 4 have become detached and there are 2 red white-heart beads missing. One of the red white heard beads appears to have been replaced a very long time ago but otherwise the Breastplate is 100% original and stunningly beautiful.
