Mid 19th century sampler by Elizabeth Armstrong - 1852. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers, border patterns and set of family initials. The middle section is stitched with a central floral motif which has a floral urn, fruit tree, dog and rabbit to its left and three trees, a bird and a floral urn to its right. The lower section of the gauze is s...titched to the left with a two storey red house with a blue bird standing on its roof and a man on horseback with his dog to its side, a crown and flower basket above them. The right side of the gauze is stitched with a central-ish fruit basket flanked by a peahen and open tailed peacock, a small girl standing at his side. There are three birds, a dog and a basket above then this section of stitching is underlined with a strawberry border which has Elizabeth's details and the date of April 12 1852 beneath (the year is a bit tricky to read). The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few areas of damage to the gauze. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 12 1/2" x 17" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
