EARLY/MID 19TH CENTURY HOUSE, & SAILING SHIP SAMPLER BY GRACE HUNTER - 1839

Early/mid 19th century sampler by Grace Hunter aged 11 - 1839. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with a small example of floral border to each side of the last row. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a charming scene of a large three storey house nestled amongst trees with farm buildings to its right. These ...have a gated and fenced garden area to the front with an expanse of sea to their right which has a ship in full sail on top of its waves. This section of needlework is then underlined with an exquisite rose border. The lower section of the gauze contains the following verse which has a tulip to the left and a goose to the right

Grace's details and the date of AD.1839 are stitched across the bottom edge of the gauze then the whole piece is surrounded by a strawberry border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges with some patches of faint staining. The colours of the wool are good with some minor bleeding to areas of the stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Grace first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 16 1/2" across x 16 1/4"
