I will not be proud of my youth or my beautySince both of them wither and fadeBut gain a good name by well doing my dutyThis will scent like a rose when I'm dead
Grace's details and the date of AD.1839 are stitched across the bottom edge of the gauze then the whole piece is surrounded by a strawberry border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges with some patches of faint staining. The colours of the wool are good with some minor bleeding to areas of the stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Grace first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 16 1/2" across x 16 1/4"
