EARLY 19TH CENTURY RED HOUSE, MOTIF & ALPHABET SAMPLER BY CHRISTIAN HENRY - 1816

Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Christian Henry - 1816. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched in green and red with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns finishing with a row of family initials. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following biblical quotation which has two rows of large alphabet letters beneath, also worked in red and green

The lower section of the linen is stitched with a row of three crowns which have sets of initials and hearts above them with a cockerel, diamond and flower to their left and a flower basket to their right. There is a delightful two storey red house below the crowns which has a blue roof and steps leading down from its entrance. There is a deer on each side of the roof with a large diamond by the deer on the left and a large heart by the one on the right, each surrounded by small hearts and diamonds. The left side of the house is stitched with a bird table, crowns, a floral motif and rabbit, whilst the right side of the house is stitched with a dog, crowns, tree, dog in a field and a rabbit. Each of the lower corners is stitched with a carnation motif with the left side carnation having a rabbit, diamond, crown and floral motif by its side. Christian's name and the date of October 1816 are stitched across the bottom edge then the whole piece is surrounded by a narrow red line border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places, and the colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss and minor bleeding to the quotation. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Christian first stitched it. This photograph also shows remnants of old paper around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time.PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large sampler measuring 17 1/2" x 25"
