Original Description:
Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Ann Blair. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1820 or slightly earlier. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns followed by rows of sets of family initials, whilst the middle section contains Ann's name with the initials WB and MS beneath, possibly those of her par...ents. The lower section of the linen is stitched with an imposing red brick country house with a cockerel standing on the roof of its left side annexe and a floral motif to the side of the annexe on the right. There are two open tailed peacocks above the house with a fruit basket between them, five birds surrounding them and a floral urn by the peacock on the right. The linen in front of the house is stitched with three hillocks with a tree on top and between each. There are birds and flowers by the upper trees and a dog, rabbit, two deer and two tiny fruit baskets between the three lower trees. The top and bottom edges of the linen are stitched with a strawberry border, whilst the side edges are stitched with a strawberry and flower border. The top left and bottom right corners have a flower stitched in them, whilst the remaining two are stitched with a patterned square.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places, and the colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Ann first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few small areas of damage around the edges of the linen, some having resulted in a small amount of stitch loss. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. Measures 9 1/2" x 16 1/4"
