Air Vice Marshal Harold 'Birdy' Bird-Wilson CBE DFO DFC* AFC:
Joined the RAF in 1937 and flew and fought with 17 squadron during the Battle of France. He also fought throughout the Battle of Britain, awarded the DFC in September of 1940, the same date as he was shot down by Major Adolph Galland of JG26, forced to bail out with severe burns. He late...r became C/O of 152 squadron in April 1942 then promoted Wing Commander 1943 he led 121 wing and later 122 wing. During January 1944 he was sent to the US command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. Throughout the rest of 1944 he flew Mustangs, he was awarded the DSO during January 1945. He added the Czech Medal of Merit, 1st Class and the Dutch DFC. He remained in the RAF after WWII until his retirement in 1974. By 1987 he had flown no less than 213 different types, including an Airship, the James Bond Auto-giro and during 1978 the F-15 Eagle.
He passed away in December 2000.
