Stretch out O Lord thy willing handTo guide my ...erring youthAnd lead me to that blissful land Where dwells eternal truth
The lower section of the gauze is stitched with an idyllic rural scene of a cottage with a picket fence to its right side and trees, fruit trees and a floral motif around it. Hannah's details and the date of 1847 are stitched beneath with a small bird on each side of the date followed by a larger bird and flower basket. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with the odd small, faint stain. The colours of the thread are good with some slight bleeding to the stitch work of the writing and some small areas of stitch loss in the alphabet letters and the border beneath the verse. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Hannah first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time. Measures 12" x 16 1/2"
