The present drawing, executed in pen, ink and grey wash on laid paper, depicts a study of an architectural element in late baroque style (a corinthian capital).

FERDINANDO GALLI BIBIENA (Bologna 1657 - 1743 Bologna) : Italian painter, draughtsman, decorator and architect. He was the son of the painter Giovanni Maria Galli and studied painting under Carlo Cignani and architecture in the studio of Giulio Trogli. On recommendation of Cignani, Bibiena entered into the service of the duke of Parma and he also worked for the Farnese family in Piacenza. He designed the family's garde at Colorno, but soon, he earned a reputation for his scenic designs and began working for the theatre.In 1708, Bibiena was called to Barcelona to organize the decorations in connection with the wedding festivities of the future emperor Charles. When Charles became the Emperor of the Holy Empire, Bibiena traveled to Vienna, where he worked on scenery designs and decorations for court festivities and opera performances.
He returned to Bologna in 1716, where in 1717, he was elected as a member of the Clementine Academy. In 1731, Bibiena built the royal theatre of Mantua (which burned 50 years later, in 1781).
He also wrote and edited several books on architecture.
Bibiena died in Bologna at very old age.

Condition : Good. Some scattered dirt throughout. Sides and corners damaged, small fragments of paper missing (not affecting the drawing itself). Zone mid left : two small holes. Some traces of wrinkling. Some small spots. Bottom side mid : one small secured tear. Unframed.
