Andrew Jackson -- a group of 5 landgrants (only one personally signed by Jackson), granting various parcels toGerard W. Creagh 160 acres of land in Alabama in December 1830. Creagh was an early settler, merchant andfarmer in Clarke County Alabama, having moved to the region form SouthCarolina. He was a veteran in the early Indian battles of the area. Between 1819 and 1842 he was elected on andoff to the Alabama State House and Senate. The document is in tough shape wit...h heavy staining and some loss ofpaper on the left third. Jackson’ssignature is in brown ink, light but legible except for the last twoletters. Staining and shrinkage of thevellum on the lower right corner has made the “on” of Jackson illegible. This should probably be bid as a clippedsignature due to the overall condition of the document. It can of course be cutwith enough text to show it is a signature as president. Ofsome additional interest with this piece are successive grants of more landover the next 15 years by Van Buren and Polk. Each of these four additional grants are signed by secretaries. Three Van Burens are signed by his sonMartin, who also adds his own name and the Polk is signed by the president’snephew James Knox Walker. All of the secretarial grants are in toughercondition than the Jackson with staining, some loss of paper, compacting of thevellum and fading to the signatures except for the “Polk” and Walker. Secretarial grants have little value but itis uncommon to find groups of grants to the same person, especially acrossthree presidents.This item is offered byCustodians of History, Inc.
