Bischoff was born on January 14, 1864 in a small town that is now part of the Czech Republic. After receiving a basic elementary education, he began a three year apprenticeship in the local craft school. In 1879, he left to further his education in Vienna where he studied applied design, watercolor painting and ceramic decoration. Bischoff also attended an art school in Dresden, a renowned porcelain painting hub in Germany. Around 1883, Bischoff immigrated to the United States and moved to Pittsburgh not long after to take a job painting lamp shades at a glass factory. In 1888, Bischoff visited Detroit and met Mary L. Wagner, a china painter, who convinced him to leave his job at the glass factory and work in her ceramic studio. He moved to Detroit in 1889 where he worked for Mrs. Wagner for a few years until he opened Franz A. Bischoff’s Art studio in 1891. There he produced his own hand painted porcelain and also taught in watercolor as well as china painting. By the mid 1890’s, Bischoff was well-known nationwide for his talents and had his work featured in numerous national Expositions. In the Spring of 1895, Bischoff moved to Dearborn, Michigan and opened a studio and pottery. The Bischoff Art School was opened soon thereafter where he taught classes in watercolor painting and china decoration. In 1906 Bischoff and his family moved to California where he created a temporary studio in downtown Los Angeles. He had a house and studio built in South Pasadena that was completed in 1908. The scenic landscape views and picturesque garden on his property served as inspiration for his landscape paintings. Following the move to California, he made the transition from painting china to landscapes on canvas and by 1915 had essentially ended his career as a porcelain painter.(Franz A.
