Civil War POW Officer's Discharge Cert. - 5th Regt. New York Cavalry, Co. "E"
The discharge document is for 2nd Lieutenant Matthew Strait of Co. "E", 5th Regiment of Cavalry for New York State Volunteers and is dated July 19,... 1865. The document is signed by Colonel A.H. White, Regimental Commander and by Samual M. Whiteside, 1st Lt. 6th U.S. Cavalry. The document has some light wear, fading and blemishing throughout; overall in nice condition.
Mathew Strait - Enlisted on 8/30/1861 at Rawson, NY as a Private and was mustered into "E" Co. NY 5th Cavalry on 8/31/1861. He is listed in the 'Civil War Database' as have been wounded (date and location unknown), Paroled on 3/15/1863 (place not stated) and listed as a POW on 3/21/1863 at Chantilly, VA. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 11/25/1864. He mustered out on 7/19/1865 at Winchester, VA.
Samuel Marmaduke Whiteside - Enlisted in 1858 as a Private with the 6th U.S. Cavalry, where he would reach the rank of Sergeant by 1861. He was commissioned 2nd Lt. in the 6th U.S. Cavalry in 1861. He was promoted to 1st Lt, Captain in 1866, Major in the 7th U.S. Cavalry in 1885, Lt. Colonel in the 3rd U.S. Cavalry in 1895, transferred to the 5th U.S. Cavalry in 1895. He was then promoted to Colonel in the 10th U.S. Cavalry in 1898, Brigadier General in (Volunteers) in 1901 and Brigadier General (USA) in 1902. He retired in 1902.
