DENT'S HISTORY
The venerable English firm Dent was founded in London in 1814. They were watchmakers to the Queen and other royalty around the world. Dent's provided chronometers to Charles Darwin and David Livingstone, and became very well known as the makers of Big Ben. Winston Churchill was presented a Dent watch as a graduation present from his father when he left school. Winston nearly ruined it by dropping the watch in a pond. Churchill’s father paid to have it repaired at Dent’s and then gave it instead to Winston’s brother, writing young Winston: "It is clear you are not to be trusted with a valuable watch & when I get it from Mr. Dent I shall not give it back to you." Poor Winston!

Halsted was one of the founders of Johns Hopkins Medical School and is considered a giant in the history of American surgical techniques. Also noteworthy is that June 4, 1900 was his tenth wedding anniversary to wife Caroline Halsted. Dr. Mont R. Reid was one of his proteges at Hopkins and was later one of the doctors at his bedside when Halsted died on September 7, 1922.
