The blade represents the opportunity to own a historic ShinShinto tanto signed Masahide, ca. 1800s, with a full horimono carving of the powerful deity Fudo-Myoo. The blade is in MINTY condition and themountings are in Excellent condition.The sword features a ridgeless hira-zukuriconstruction. It has a blade length of 7 inches (18 cm). The blade features highlydesirable horimonos, or carvings.On one side are two short gomabashi-hithat end in a bonji Sanskrit character.On the other side is a well-implented and full carving of the powerfulprotector deity Fudo-Myoo. The hadais a well-grained and tight itame.The hamon is a well-implemented gunomemidare of offset peaks. The hamon is present the length of the bladethrough the kissaki where it ends in a maruboshi.The tang is signed SuishinshiMasahide Kao. Suishinshi Masahidewas a famous swordsmith from the late 1700s to early 1800s. He was known forinitiating the Shinshinto period of making swords using Koto techniques. He wasalso a teacher to many other swordsmiths of that time. There were threegenerations signing Masahide, the first ranked Sai Jo Saku, the second rankedJo Saku, and the third ranked Chu Saku by Fujishiro. Given the fame ofMasahide, there were also many copies of his work. This may or may not be awork by one of the three generations but I can not guarantee that aspect and aShinsa would need to weigh in as final authority.The blade comes in wooden shirasaya. It is in Excellent condition. The blade is in Near MINT condition. There are no nicks, little to no rust, and very few scratches along its length. There do not appear to be any majorflaws like hagire.Given the age, history, craftsmanship, high quality horimonos, and superb condition, I think this piece would be an outstanding addition for a collector ofWW2 militaria or Japanese swords.Terms and additional items: This item is original and not aknockoff or fake.
