LARGE Original Civil War Letter Group 38th Massachusetts, Transcripts & Research
A lot of 20 letters by Chas. H. Perry Co. K 38th Mass. Vol. 3rd Brig. - 2nd Division - 19th Ac., dating 1863-1864, from Baton Rouge LA, Washington D.C., Alexandria LA, Morganyia LA, Halltown, VA Algiers L...A, Camp Hearne, Monocay MD, there are also 6 post marked and stamped envelopes and a part of another envelope with the seal and the regiment name on it, written to his brother George B. Perry in Marshfield Mass.there is a lot of mention of guarding rebel prisoners and attempted escapes as well as picket duty and some fighting. There is also some talk of attending some of the black dances as a guard and finding it amusing. He mentions about going down the river on several occasions (perhaps transporting prisoners) and being fired on by rebels. there are 2 short letters as well as a 1933 newspaper article about the 64th reunion of the Mass. Vol. Regimen, with the picture of 2 of the members. There is a mention in the one letter that he likes guarding the rebel prisoners because they seem to have money and he and the guards take their money for special favors. He always brags about how fine the 38th is and that there are 390 in his regt. and that they started with a 1000. He mentions a General Sickles who only has one leg and he comes around to inspect the troops, he says he is the one who shot Kus.I have not read all of these just scanned some. I also have a government claims agent card that says: Bounties, Pensions and Back Pay Procured from the United States, Success Insured or No pay, Jacob Todd-Boston
100% authentic with transcriptions of the letters and impressive research within the 3 ring binder with all war & pension records
