1910 WASHINGTON FRANKLIN #384 FARWELL type 4B4 with INVERTED CANCEL The Schermack company charged a 50 cent per coil premium to perforate and coil stamps for their machines. The Farwell Company in an effort to reduce cost decided to perforate the stamps for themselves. After a series of different patterns they decided on the 4X4.
In early operation 50% of used Farwell singles displayed an inverted cancel. The cancel appears inverted because the stamp was affix...ed upside down on the envelope. The theory is, since the coils were wound gum side out, they were coiling half of them upside down.
George Howard, one of the early pioneers in the study of these stamps, said an inverted cancel was as good as a cert !!
