The sword is a Koto katana, ca. 1400-1500s from the Mino SenjuinSchool and is samurai-mounted. The blade and the mountings are in Excellent condition. The swordhas a blade length of 27 inches (69 cm). The blade features a well-grained itame hada that mixes with a burl mokume hada as well as a running masamehada. The hada is very active with prominent chikei. The hamon is a gunome midare of undulating peaks thatis present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a maruboshi with some light kaen. There areactivities like inazuma and yubashiri in and along the hamon.The tang is mumei, or unsigned. Based on the length of theblade, shape of the blade, and the workmanship, the sword was likely made by the Mino Senjuin school, ca. 1400-1500. TheMino Senjuin was a group of swordsmiths who came from Yamato province to Minoprovince in the 1300s. Their swords were known for blending both Yamato andMino traditions of swordsmithing. The blade comes in original Samurai mountings. They are in Excellent condition. Thetsuka features a brown silk ito and custom menuki. The wrapping is tight withlittle to no fraying. The tsuba is a nice copper tsuba with five accompanyingseppa. The saya (scabbard) is lacquered black and red with an intricate design.The saya shows a few small areas of missing finish, retaining roughly 95-97% of original finish. The blade is in Excellent condition. There are no nicks, little to no rust, and few scratches along the blade’s length. Notably, there is one small hagireas well as some prominent ware scattered along the middle of theblade. Given this swords history and workmanship, I think this piece would be anexcellent addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.Terms and additional items: This item is original and not aknockoff or fake.
