Youare bidding on a very rare and well-preserved fossilised upper skull of a Hesperocyongregarious found by a local collector on private land with permission in ConverseCounty, Wyoming. This skull was found in the Brule formation (a sub-unit of theWhite River Formation) of the Oligocene epoch, making this fossil approximately33 million years old. This specimen has been professionally prepared and hashad no restoration. This upper skull measures approximately 3.3" in length(1.8" wi...de & 1.1" height) and is medium-sized specimen. As withthe nature of the fossilization process, the skull is not perfect but is in goodcondition. There is no lower jaw present, but the upper skull is near complete(albeit with some mild lateral distortion due to the fossilisation process). Theteeth on this specimen are a nice caramel colour with most present andcomplete. It's molars and premolars on each side are in very good shape but thecanines on this specimen are not present. There are 4 small upper incisors present.Please see photos for more details on the condition of this specimen. Apart from the removal of excess matrix during preparation, this is totally as nature preserved it. Hesperocyon is scientifically important as itrepresents the earliest of the canids (dogs) - in other words the earliest truedog and was first described by E D Cope in 1873. A skull of a Hesperocyon is rare thing indeed so I hopeit finds it's way to a good home!
