CompanyHistory:TheQuincy Mining Company was founded in 1846 to mine native copperdeposits on property near Hancock, Michigan. The company mined thePewabic Copper Lode (Keweenaw Copper District) continuously from 1856to 1931 and then again form 1937 to 1945, producing about 1.5 billionpounds of refined copper. The mine proper occupied the hill aboveHancock, Michigan on the Keweenaw Peninsula (northernmost point ofMichigan’s Upper Peninsula). The first-story mill was on the shoreof Portage Lake below the mine; the second was on Torch Lake. Thesmelter was in Ripley, just east of Hancock, on Portage Lake. Themain company office, for the most part, was headquartered in New YorkCity. The Quincy Mining Company was Michigan's second largest copperproducer and one of national and international importance. Thiscompany, along with the Adventure Consolidated Copper Company, werethe arguably the mining district’s two most well-known andprofitable copper operations.
TheQuincy Mine is an extensive set of copper mines located near Hancock, Michigan. The mine was owned by the Quincy Mining Company andoperated between 1846 and 1945. The Quincy Mining Company representsan outstanding example of the growth and development of the UnitedStates copper industry from its earliest years through the 1940s. Ofthe numerous mining ventures spawned by the nation's first copperboom, Quincy alone survived. The Quincy Mining Company was the first company to recognizethe limits of fissure mining and shift to amygdaloid beds, which, with the conglomerate lodes, were the low mineral-content rock uponwhich the future of the copper range district of the KeweenawPeninsula depended. The company earned the title "Old Reliable"for a fifty-four-year sequence of dividends paid to its stockholdersand its ability to continue mining during economically difficulttimes when all but the giant Calumet and Hecla had shut down.
